Circumcision was a covenant God gave to Abraham and to the future Israelite people to show God's commitment and promise to His people. This act was an outward sign of the flesh, but God's purpose was for us to become circumcised of the "heart"...for us to give up our "fleshly desires" to Him and come to worship Him with our "whole heart".
Genesis 17: 10-11
This is My covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: Every male child among you shall be circumcised; 11 and you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you.
Romans 2: 29
But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God.
The old covenant was established to show the separation of God's people from the world. God gave this covenant to Abraham as a promise: "I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you". (Genesis 17: 7)
We, as Christians today, are called to a "circumcision of the heart". When we accepted Jesus as our Savior, and "surrender" all to Him, we are saying that we want to "die-to-self" daily and give up our fleshly desires that come from the heart.

Colossians 2: 11-14
In Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self-ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with Him through your faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.
13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; He has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.
PERSONNAL COMMENT:
We are called now to be separated from the world as well and focus on what Jesus did on the cross and the things that are to come for us in heaven someday soon.
Colossians 3: 1-3
Since then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
