The bible verse of 1 John 1:9, is a verse I remember memorizing as one of my first verses of the bible. This verse is so vital in a Christian's walk with the Lord. To know that all we need to do is come before God and confess our sins to Him, and He will cleans us from all our unrighteousness.

1 John 1: 9
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
When we confess our sins, what we are doing is agreeing with God that wat we did was wrong and agree that we will not continue down this road of sin repeatedly. Yes, we are only human, but we cannot stop sinning by our own self-will. We must "completely and fully surrender" ourselves to the power of the Holy Spirit living within us.
It is through the power of the Holy Spirit and our full surrender to God, that we will begin to see victory in our lives. And when we do fail again, we go back to God and confess those sins again and realize that He cleans us again at that very moment.
Can A Few Spoken Words Erase Our Shameful and Sinful Past? Is It Really That Easy?
(The following is an excerpt from "Our Daily Bread):
There’s good news, though. God does offer each of us a clean start. Only, He goes far deeper than merely deleting our mistakes or bad behavior. God provides redemption, a deep healing that transforms us and makes us new. “Return to me,” He says, “I have redeemed you” (Isaiah 44:22). Even though God's own people rebelled and disobeyed, God reached out to them with lavish mercy. He “swept away [their] offenses like a cloud, [their] sins like the morning mist” (v. 22). He gathered all their shame and failures and washed them away with His wide, sweeping grace.
God will do the same with our sins and painful mistakes. There is no mistake He cannot mend, no wound He cannot heal. God’s mercy heals and redeems the most painful places in our soul—even the ones we have hidden for so awfully long. His mercy sweeps away all our guilt, washes away every regret.
PERSONAL COMMENT:
So, what are these few spoken words we can say? It all begins with a contrite and broken heart. We must first realize that we no longer want to go on living our lives the way we have been living it. We need God to come into our lives and hearts and take full control. We must be willing to "absolutely surrender" all of us to Him.
The following is a simple prayer. The words are not magical in anyway. But if you want to say this prayer, God is looking at your heart as you do. He will know if you truly mean it. Allow Him to come in and begin to clean up your life. Remember, let Him do it, not you.
"Lord Jesus, I want You to come into my life right now. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my heart, my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving me of my sins and giving me eternal life. I surrender the control of my life to You. Make me the kind of person You want me to be, in Your name I pray, Amen."
