In the 31st chapter of Deuteronomy, Moses is coming to the end of leading the people of Israel to the Promise Land. Moses has asked God not to send the people ahead without someone to lead them. God tells Moses that He has picked Joshua to lead the people into the Promise Land. God also reassures the people of Israel that He would be with them as well.

Deuteronomy 31: 6
"Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”
The people of Israel feared the people of the new land they were about to enter, even though God had proven Himself to them over the last forty years, day, and night. We also fear the new conditions we are about to face in our lives, even though God has shown His constant presence in our lives.
We come to fear the new challenges or obstacles that come our way. Why do you think we feel this way most of the times? Why can't we trust our God? Hasn't He proven Himself time and time again to us as well?
I believe we fear because of our lack of knowing and trusting the very character of God. Our God is all powerful, all knowing, always present, and most of all, loving. A God who was willing to give up His righteous throne in heaven for us, became a "mortal man", and then allowed Himself to be crucified on our behalf for our sins so that we can have a personal relationship with Him...How much more love can One give to prove He is trustworthy?
But you are probably thinking..."That promise was in the "Old Testament" of the Bible"...and you would be right. But God once again assured us that He would be with us and not leave us or forsake us, and that was promised through His Son, Jesus. Read the following in the Book of Matthew:
Matthew 28: 20 (NKJV)
20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
PERSONNAL COMMENT:
The reason we do not trust the character of God is because we tend to see God from our own limited minds...We see God based on our own personal experiences. We must be willing to "absolutely surrender" all of ourselves...our thoughts, our misconceptions, our past hurts, and circumstances. We must fully come to trust the very character of our Loving God.
